Biography

Wolfgang G. Mohaupt is a retired member of the Ontario Association of Architects and a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. As a practicing architect, Wolfgang became interested in sculpture while coordinating the integration of major sculptures into architectural projects.

After building a house on McGregor lake in Val des Monts Quebec, Wolfgang started working on wood sculptures around 1990 primarily using the wood from a very large dead butternut tree. A separate sculpture studio was built a few years later.

Wood sculptures look and feel warmer than metal ones. Wolfgang works with many types of wood and allows the characteristics of each piece of wood such as knots, cracks, colour, hardness and especially the grain to influence the sculpture process and character of the final product.

While still working as an architect Wolfgang designed several cottages built at least partially of post and beam construction. He used the leftover pieces of wood to build large ‘constructivist’ sculptures, two of which were donated to the owners and installed on site. Two other ones of this type, both 12′-6″ tall, are still available.

Domicile Developments commissioned Wolfgang to design a 20 ft tall sculpture for a condominium on Bronson Avenue opposite Second Avenue in Ottawa. (808 Bronson, built in 2012). This sculpture called TIMBER commemorates the lumber baron J.R. Booth who had a lumber yard on that site.

Over many years a large number of a wide variety of wood sculptures have been created. Other than the types shown in the photos there are many hanging pieces Including several flying birds as well as two 7 and 8 ft. long pieces that are being considered for a two storey condominium lobby ceiling. There are also bas relief pieces, heads, busts, birds and mobiles as well as many animal sculptures and abstract sculptures. Most of the sculptures express movement.

There are over 150 sculptures that can be viewed at Wolfgang’s studio in Val des Monts, Quebec. Please send an email for more information or to make an appointment for a studio tour.
